Time for another round-up of what I read this month! September was a great month for reading. I had some great reads this month, and some lukewarm, and only one I didn’t truly like. Hoping for some cozy, spooky reads in October!
Something Wilder by Christina Lauren – ★★★
Starting mild this month. There are several Christina Lauren books on the list. Who am I kidding? There always are. I put them on my holds list on the Libby app and sometimes I get several at once. I like these books because they are similar to Emily Henry vibes. These books are a little spicy without being smutty, but they usually have a cute love story. They are quick reads and good palette cleansers between my heavier books. However, Something Wilder was not my favorite. This one was a bit of a wilderness adventure story and sometimes it lost the plot a little. Just wasn’t my favorite.
Josh and Hazel’s Guide to Not Dating by Christina Lauren – ★★★★
Another Christina Lauren book that I liked better was Josh and Hazel’s Guide to Not Dating. It was a cute, friends-to-lovers story. Hazel kind of stressed me out because I’m a type 6 on the Enneagram and she is definitely not, but it was cute.
The Unfortunate Side Effects of Heartbreak and Magic by Breanne Randall – ★
Ugh. This one was painful. It was advertised as “Practical Magic meets Gilmore Girls” and it was not. That’s really all I can say. I wanted a fun fall read to get ready for Spooky Season. If you feel the same, you can skip this one.
By Any Other Name by Jodi Picoult – ★★★★★
Loved this one. Oh my gosh. It’s a flashback/current-day historical fiction novel. The current day is about a woman who wrote a play about her female ancestor who actually wrote Shakespeare’s plays. She is having a hard time breaking into the theatre business as a playwright so she pretends her male best friend wrote it to get traction. The flashbacks are to the ancestor that the play is about and her life story. Her plays were seen by many but only because she wrote them using Shakespeare’s name. It’s a heartbreaking story but filled with Shakespeare-Easter eggs. I loved it! It’s so different than Jodi Picoult’s other books, but it was so, so good.
Better Than The Movies by Lynn Painter – ★★★★
If you liked The DUFF, you will like this book. It’s a super cute teenage love story between next-door neighbors. The main character loves classic romantic movies and pretends her life is like on. She has a crush on a boy. Her neighbor helps her try to date him. You can kind of guess how this ends, but it’s really cute. There is a sequel coming out in October that I will definitely be reading because the first was so cutie.
The Paradise Problem by Christina Lauren – ★★★★★
This was my favorite of the Christina Lauren’s this month. It’s actually probably in my top three of the Christina Lauren’s I’ve read so far. It was a very cute story. It’s sort of a second-chance romance, without the first official romance. Plus there is a deceive the family plot. It’s better than I’m making it sound. I liked it a lot.
The Third Gilmore Girl by Kelly Bishop – ★★★★★
This is the best memoir I’ve ever read. I am a huge Gilmore Girls fan and I love Kelly Bishop. The beginning reads like the Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, but with less husbands. It’s so glamorous about her life as a dancer on broadway and originating her role in A Chorus Line and winning a Tony. Then we get into her life during Dirty Dancing. Then finally to Gilmore Girls. You read about her relationship with Lauren and Edward Hermann and Amy Sherman Palladino. It’s amazing.
Seven Year Slip by Ashley Poston – ★★★★★
This book was on my holds list FOREVER. My sister-in-law recommended it right after Guy was born and I just got it this month in the Libby app. It was worth the wait. I loved it. Kind of a Sandra Bullock Lake House story where the main character has an apartment that flashes backward seven years. She flashes back to when a cute chef is subletting the apartment and they fall in love, then she meets him in present-day. He knows her but she doesn’t have all the pieces of their story. It’s really cute!
What in the World?! by Leanne Morgan – ★★★★★
I love Leanne Morgan the comedian. She is southern and relatable if you are from the south or have southern relatives or are a mom. Her book is hilarious and full of funny stories about her life. I loved it. If you like her comedy specials, you will absolutely like this book.
