What I read in August 2024

I started this month already and included the first half of August with my July reads. I was on track to read a good bit in the second part of August, so here is part two of that post!

In a Holidaze by Christina Lauren – ★★★

If you are looking for a cutie Christmas book, this is a great one. I read it in August, but still cute. It’s not my favorite of the Christina Lauren books. There is some time travel looping in the first half of the book, but then that is kind of forgotten in the second half. I think more could have been done with that plot point. Overall though, super cute.

The Perfect Marriage by Jeneva Rose – ★★★★★

Ooooh I loved this one. I did predict the ending, but I didn’t mind. I was still questioning my prediction throughout the book. If you want a mystery/thriller this is a good one. A man is having an affair and his mistress ends up dead in his bed at his mountain house. His wife is the top defense attorney in the state and she defends him in court. It’s so good.

It Starts With Us by Colleen Hoover – ★★★

I read It Ends With Us in the first half of August, so I also read It Starts with Us. This one is not as good, but I liked it. It makes fun of some of the terribly cheesy things that happen in the first book. Both of these are worth a read.

The Women by Kristin Hannah – ★★★★★

Love, love, love this book. One of my favorites of the year. No notes. It’s so good. If you like historical fiction, this book focuses on the women in the Vietnam War. I feel like so many books focus on WWII, so it was cool to read one from the Vietnam War especially one that focuses on women and what it was like for them. Add this to your list. It’s amazing.

Black Cake by Charmaine Wilkerson – no rating

I wanted to love this book because everyone likes this book. I did not, but I think I’m the problem here so I’m not going to be super critical. It has incredibly short chapters and a lot of plot points and twists that get sprinkled in. You really have to pay attention. I have a newborn baby and I’m exhausted. I don’t think my mental capacity could handle this book right now. I kept getting lost and missing things. The short chapters kind of reset my brain every few pages. So I may give this one a re-read when I’m a little more “with it” or I may just watch the series. I’m not going to rate it, though, because I really do think I’m the problem here. Maybe read someone else’s review of this one!

The Wedding People by Alison Espach – ★★★★★

Loved this book! It does start out pretty dark, but the mood picks up and it is hilarious, heartwarming and a great read. I feel like I need to give a trigger warning for depression, suicide, miscarriage and infertility in the beginning of the book, but it really is a great read. It’s probably my second favorite of this batch.

Hemlock House by Katie Cotugno – ★★

This is a sequel to “Liars Beach” which I have never read. I didn’t know that before I started this book, though. I was worried that would be a problem, but it wasn’t so much. This book references the first one a few times, but you can still read “Hemlock House” as a stand-alone. It wasn’t my favorite, though. I predicted the ending as soon as I read the crime scene and was anticipating the ending in each scene. I just didn’t love it.

Five Star Weekend by Elin Hilderbrand – ★★★★

My favorite thing about Elin Hilderbrand’s books is the details. The way she describes the food and the scenery is just so vivid and I love it. This book was actually one of my favorites of the Elin Hilderbrand books I’ve read recently and the perfect way to end summer. I read it over Labor Day weekend at the beach!
