I’m not sure if you’ve seen the Disney Halloween Village from Costco that has gone viral on social media. I have looked high and low for the Disney Village at our local Costco, but I haven’t had any success. I was pretty disappointed that I couldn’t find one. My little man LOVES Mickey so I decided to make my own!

How to Make Your Own Halloween Village
I also just love a Halloween village. It gives a vintage spooky vibe. I have been looking to do a village for awhile now. Our Halloween decor leans pretty spooky since it has just been me and Stephen for so many years. Now that our sweet Ben is with us, and is starting to understand what is going on, I don’t want him to be afraid of our Halloween decor. So I am definitely shifting how we decorate this year. I definitely created this Disney Village with him in mind. My little Mickey-loving dude may not appreciate it this year, but hopefully will love it in years to come.
I am pretty proud of how this all turned out. I actually spent less than I would have on the Costco village as well, so that was a nice little bonus. Plus it was fun to put together. Here’s how I did it.

First I had to find the houses. We started looking at plastic little houses, but we couldn’t find exactly what we were looking for. I actually purchased a bigger dollhouse and some smaller plastic houses but that just wasn’t the vibe I wanted. So I was THRILLED when I found these unique wooden bird houses at Michael’s. There were also some castle options and different types of houses, but I landed on the ones in the photo. I actually set the whole thing up on an empty shelf while I was shopping so I could plan it out. Also, I added a pirate ship and a gazebo for fun.

I purchased the houses and spray painted them all solid black. That was the easiest way to get the spooky feeling. So I let them dry and then added some grey paint to give each of the pieces a haunted texture. I did leave the sails on the pirate ship sold black and painted the skull and crossbones white. I wanted the sails to be different than the weathered look I gave the other pieces in the village.
Next I wanted to focus on the charaters.
I found a little Mickey Mouse and friends set at Target. I purchased two because I knew Mickey and Minnie needed to be doing different things. Also, I painted all of the pieces with acrylic paint to give them Halloween vibes. I painted Donald’s outfit black, painted Mickey’s shoes black rather than yellow. Minnie got painted twice, one version she has a black outfit and a green face so she could be a witch. The other her outfit got painted purple so she can be a vampire. Goofy was painted white so I could make him a mummy. Pluto got to stay his original color.

Once my charaters were painted, I gave them new wardrobes. I made a little mini witch hat for Minnie. I wrapped Goofy in guaze tape to become a mummy. Mickey and Minnie got little vampire capes to match their outfits. I gave pirate Mickey a little bandana.
I had my characters and houses completed so then I wanted to add lights. So, I purchased these blinking lights in orange and purple and then these little LED candles to place inside the houses. A few of the houses had door openings large enough for the LED Candles. So those I can turn on and pop in easily.

A few of the houses didn’t have openings that were large enough for a candle, so these houses got a small hole on the back and I fed the string lights into the house. The control box stayed outside of the house so I can still turn them on and off.
I created the base for my village from this mat and these foam bases.
I could have made them, but I got them on sale so I probably spent less buying these that were already made vs. creating my own. So I stacked them up to create levels and placed my houses and pieces on the different levels.

I added rocks around my pirate ship to give it the illusion that it was either in water or by some rocks. Then I added a few bottle brush trees and a tree I found in the Target dollar spot. I added these string lights to the back of the table so I could give the entire village a glow.
I love how this turned out. It brings me so much spooky joy and I’m so happy to have some kid-friendly decor in the house!

Also I did want to note that Michael’s is having a sale, so if you want to create your own, definitely jump on it while these items are on sale!! That’s how I kept the price down.
Happy Halloween!
