Happy Friday! Only on this blog can we have a post about LISS workouts and tator tot bites in the same week. Whatever, this blog is all about balance. I have been doing the BBG Workout on the Sweat with Kayla app. I’m finishing up week 3! Whoo!!!
Obviously it’s hard. You hear lots of friends and family (including me) whining about it on Instagram stories and in everyday conversation. However, one workout that comes up frequently in the program is the LISS workout. LISS cardio has become very trendy over the past few years and for good reason. I feel like Kayla Itsines who created the BBG Workout has really be the leader of this trend.
So let’s start with the basics…what the heck is a LISS workout? LISS stands for Low-Intensity Sustained State. Basically a marathon, not a sprint. This is the kind of cardio that you do for 30 or 60 minutes rather than in short little spurts. The short little spurts of intense cardio are referred to as HIIT (High-Intensity Interval Training), but we’ll save that for another day. LISS uses oxygen to help break down fat. So with lower-intensity workouts, more oxygen is available to help break down fat. Basically you don’t want to be out of breath.
Why is it so popular? Basically you can catch up on Netflix while you workout. Jk…sort of. Seriously, this workout is perfect for those who have pretty intense workouts and need a rest or recovery day. (LOL the BBG program.) Instead of doing nothing on rest or recovery days, engaging in a LISS workout can help you achieve results, and keep up with a routine. Plus it helps prevents injuries.
It also helps get into a workout routine. It isn’t an intimidating way to workout, so it’s perfect for those just getting started or preparing for an intense workout program. BONUS: you can still see killer results doing a LISS only program. It helps burn fat so you can seriously lose weight with LISS cardio.
OK. So now that we’ve gotten that out of the way, what are types of LISS workouts? Remember that these are done in 30, 45, 60 minute increments.
- Walking/hiking
- Jogging
- Cycling
- Swimming
- Surfing
- Rowing
- Kayaking
- Stair Climber-slowly lol
- Elliptical
- Dancing
- Youtube Videos (because let’s face it, sometimes it’s too cold to go outside and you don’t have equipment)
- Jumping rope
So there you go! LISS is a super-important part of working out, whether you are alternating it with a high-intensity workout, or just trying to burn fat and lose weight.
Do you engage in LISS workouts? What is your favorite way to exercise?
never heard of this but def want to try it out! love that work out outfit girl! killin’ it!
This sounds like my find of workout since it’s really just doing activities that are enjoyable anyway… hiking, dancing, higher impact walking. Good to know.
I’m on week 4 of BBG right now and I kind of love the LISS workouts because I catch up on my shows or binge new ones LOL. Today was Week 4 Legs though and my thighs already hurt!
I do try to incorporate as much LISS workouts as I can. I enjoy swimming and walking and are usually the exercises I do the most.
I have the BBG workout guide and I’ve been meaning to start it, but I keep putting it off! I think I’m going to start it next week now!
That’s so interesting. I never herd of LISS before. I’m not a huge workout person, since I’m skinny, but I like jogging when the weather is nice.
