Board and Brush Girl’s Night

I received a complimentary class at Board and Brush, but all opinions are my own.

Last week, I was able to attend a Board and Brush class with my friend Brina! We visited the Johns Creek location for those in Atlanta. If you haven’t heard of Board and Brush, think a popular DIY painting class but with wooden signs you create from start to finish. These are actual products you would like to hang in your home and every single one turns out wonderful.

Brina is getting married next year, so she created a sign for her wedding. I am borderline obsessed with pineapples, so of course I made a pineapple welcome sign for our new house. Our first sigh of relief was released when we walked in and saw we had a stencil. Hallelujah, because I already had severe anxiety about free handing anything.

Upon first observation, we had a couple of raw pieces of wood on the table covered by our stencil, a wall of paint colors behind us, a meat mallet and a hammer, and jars on the table containing screws, sandpaper, and little strips of cloth.

We grabbed our aprons, opened our snacks and waited for the class to begin. First thing we did was “distress” our wood, which really meant beating it with stuff. This was my favorite part, ha! You could create dents and notches with your meat mallet, hammer and screws. Then you sanded down all the edges to your liking.

Next step was to stain the wood. I chose a brown stain followed by a light grey dry brush. I love love love the way my wood turned out. Brina chose a classic wood look. Then we assembled our signs before attaching our stencils and choosing our paint colors.

For paint, I went with all white lettering. Brina did as well but finished with a warm wax to create a cream color. We painted over our stencils (thank God for stenciling!) and peeled them up to reveal our masterpieces.

I was SO thankful for the help and support of the staff to create our beautiful signs. I am beyond pleased with our my final product and it is already proudly displayed in my house.

A couple of things I learned:

  1.  Don’t wear bell sleeves. This was actually really stupid on my part because I had to put them in a ponytail.
  2. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. The staff can clean up almost anything…
  3. Have fun! I get anxiety over everything but this is supposed to be fun!

This was the best DIY art class I’ve ever taken and I was thrilled to get the opportunity. The good news is Board and Brush is all over the country, not just in Atlanta! So you can take a class near you! Find your location here!

Have you taken a Board and Brush class? What did you make?

I love this concept! I’ve heard of the paint and sip art nights but I’ve never seen any kind of class for the wooden signs! I would do so many of these! Pittsburgh doesn’t have anything like this. Love your signs.
