On Monday, I had the pleasure of taking my first POUND® In the Dark class. I am super excited that these classes are making their way into Atlanta and interviewed our instructor Mary Tabor to get all the details. Check it out below.
Tell us a little about POUND?
Pound is a full body workout using Ripstix, which are light weight drum sticks. The workout includes cardio, strength training, conditioning with yoga and pilates inspired movements. You quickly become the music instead of listening to it, it’s the perfect workout to let loose and rock out while toning at the same time.
Why is it an effective form of exercise?
You burn up to at least 900 calories per hour, you can drum your way to a leaner and slimmer physique all while rocking out to your favorite music. It also helps improve your rhythm, timing, coordination, speed, agility, endurance and musicality.
Why did you decide to become a POUND instructor?
I fell in love with it by the first class I took, and realized it was not like any other workout I’ve ever done. You don’t even realized your working out, it was the perfect jam session!
What equipment is required to take a POUND class?
Ripstix is the only thing you’ll need and I always bring them for the class. Some like to have a yoga mat under them, that’s a preference.
Approximately how many calories can you burn during one POUND class?
At least 900 calories! Even better reason to take the class right?
What other benefits can you expect from working out in a POUND class?
Numerous studies have proven the powerful brain boosting, stress-relieving effects of drumming. The rhythm of drumming permeates the entire brain to improve focus, increase higher-level thinking and decision-making skills, boost the immune system, lower blood pressure, decrease chronic pain, anxiety, and fatigue.
Are there any age/fitness level/other requirements to take a POUND class?
Right now most classes made for teens and older, Pound is working towards being able to have children classes in their future. But every song can be modified so if you have injuries or if you’re new to working out there’s always modifications you can do.
Where can interested people take a POUND class?
Some gyms hold classes, but when I moved here to Atlanta I realized barely any gyms offered Pound that’s why I decided to start up classes.
Are you specifically offering any other classes in Atlanta?
My next class will be held at The Space Atlanta at 7:15pm, but you can keep up with me on Facebook so find out about more future classes @poundtheworkout
Can you work out with POUND at home?
Unless you buy your own Ripstix (which you can online) and remember the moves to a song it may be difficult.
Anything else you want to share?
One thing I love about this class is if I take it after having a bad day or I get mad about something it’s the perfect class to just pound it out. You’ll leave with a mood changer and feeling refreshed!
Oh my gosh, 900 calories? Sounds like a great workout. I would love to try it!
