Reading more is one of my goals this year. Luckily, I joined a book club which has reignited my love of reading. We kicked off the year by reading Yes Please by Amy Poehler. I remembered how much I love reading and followed that up with three other great books! So I read four books in January which is more than I read of all of 2016. Whoops.
I am one of those people who just voraciously readsย a book. Once I start, I just can’t put it down. So I stay up late, ignore the outside world, and read a whole book in one sitting. I wish I was one of those people who can read just a few pages before bed, but instead I need an extended period of time to just get lost in a book.
I loved every book I’ve read this month. Like I said, I started with Yes Please. I was late to the party on this one, but I really did love it. I was laughing out loud and loved getting some behind the scenes tidbits about SNL. This book led to an awesome discussion with my club about women in the workplace.
Next month my book club is reading Big Little Lies.ย I went ahead and tore through that one as well. They are creating an HBO series starting Feb. 19 with Reese Witherspoon, so we chose to read this before it starts. Holy cow, I couldn’t put this one down. It’s so good. I’m really looking forward to the series after reading this book.
I also read Small Great Things by Jodi Picoult. I have read everything she’s ever written. While this isn’t my favorite Jodi Picoult book, it’s certainly not one of her worst. This book caused a lot of self-reflection which was a new perspective for her. For years, she had a trend of one really great book, followed by one that was not so great. This one was pretty great!
Finally, of course, I had to read Talking As Fast As I Can. I adore Lauren Graham as a human being, as Lorelai Gilmore, and as basically any character she has ever played. This book is laugh out loud funny and makes you feel like you really spent an evening with Lauren. This book was also perfectly timed because it came out right after the revival. Just when I started to miss Lorelai again, I got to read her book. This book is great, seriously you have to read it if you’re a Gilmore fan.
What are you reading lately?
Yay I love book recap posts! I have read Big Little Lies and also loved it. I just heard about the HBO show so now I have to find a way to watch it! I also loved Small Great Things and just heard they are making it into a movie starring Julia Roberts and Viola Davis!!! I am on the waitlist for the Lauren Graham book (and just discovered she wrote a fiction novel a few years ago) and I have Yes Please on my list to read but I am not sure I will love it. Thanks for the suggestions! Check out my reading recap on the blog today too and if you need any book suggestions, I have a whole page on my blog (under Fun Stuff tab) recapping all the books I’ve read in the past year and a half.
I just heard about the new movie! How exciting is that?! I can’t wait to see what they do with it. I’m a die hard Gilmore Girls fan so that Lauren Graham book was one of my favorites. I need to read her novel next! I had no idea she wrote one until I read this book and she talks about it. I will definitely stop by and check out your recommendations! Thanks!
I’ll have to check these out! My goal is to read more this new year too.
I really missed it last year so I’m glad I’m making it a priority again.
I have not read anything by Leane Moriarty yet but I keep hearing how good she is. I need to read a book of hers. I recently read Dark Matters by Blake Couch. Put it on your TBR list. It really makes you think about alternate realities and what is real and what isn’t. Couldn’t put it down. Action packed. #showyourbloglove
Ah! Thanks for the recommendation! I will have to check that one out.
I can’t wait to read Big Little Lies, and then watch the HBO series. The Lauren Graham book is one I’ll have to check out! Did you join the SYBL book club?
I didn’t, but I heard about it so maybe I should have since they’re reading the same book this month. I joined a book club with some of my pals. We make appetizers and drink wine and talk about the books. It’s really fun!
I just bought Talking As Fast As I Can and can’t wait to read it! I’m a huge Gilmore Girls fan. I don’t have Amy Poehler’s book but I’ve just finished Bossy Pants by Tina Fey and loved it.
Roxie | The Beautiful Bluebird
It’s so good! I also love Tina and Amy so Bossypants will have to be on my next to read list!
Jodi picoult is one of my faves! I love all of ther books!

Me too! I’ve been reading her stuff for years! What is your favorite book of hers?
I love posts like this! It always gives me new ideas of books to read! I’m hoping to read Big Little Lies this month and I cannot wait! I’ve also read Lauren Graham’s book as well as Amy Poehler’s book and I LOVED THEM! These are great choices!
Big Little Lies is so good! I’m so glad I read that one before the new series. Yep, I was laughing out loud to both of those.
I freaking LOVED Yes Please! I bought the audio book and listen to parts of it whenever I’m in my car-she’s so funny!
So one of the girls in our book club did the audio book and she said it was absolutely hysterical having Amy and Seth and all involved read to her. Even though I’ve already read it, I definitely want to get the audio book too because I just can’t even imagine how hilarious it is!
I love love Lauren Graham. I didn’t know she had a book though. I’ll definitely add this to my reading list!!!
I just found out while reading this book that she also wrote a novel! I’m adding that to my reading list too!
Are you in the SYBL book club? I can not wait to read Big Little Lies. I heard it was really good! I also can’t wait for the HBO series to come out. I have Talking As Fast As I Can on my list to read as well.
I’m not! But I just found out that’s what they’re reading so maybe I should join!
These are such great recommendations! I love reading #GirlBoss kind of books and I’ve heard that the one by Amy Poehler has a similar vibe so I’ll definitely check it out!

It is definitely an empowering book, I think you would love it!
I’ve read Amy Schumer’s, Tina Fey’s, and both of Mindy Kaling’s book, so Amy Poehler’s is definitely on my list! So is Lauren Graham’s!
Big Little Lies was one of my favorite books I read in 2016. I’m planning on reading more by Liane Moriarty. I’m so excited about the tv series. I hope it’s as good as the book is.
I want to read more by Liane too. Absolutely you should read Amy Poehler and Lauren Graham’s! They’re both so cute.
I have wanted to read Yes Please FOREVER! I really should check it out the next time I go to the library.
It’s so cute. I’ve had it on my shelf forever and I’m so glad I finally read it.
Those are some pretty good books! I’ve been debating whether or not I want to read “The Husbands Secret.” I’ve heard good things about the series, but I’m just not sure if I’ll like it. Currently, I’m reading The Woman in Cabin 10 by Ruth Ware and The Fishermen by Chigozie Obioma. I’m about halfway through The Woman in Cabin 10, and I’m hoping it gets better. So far, I think it’s sooo boring. Have you read it?
Oh I haven’t heart of those! I need to add them to my reading list. Thanks for the recommendations!
Big Little Lies is my list of books to read this month as well.
It’s great. Let me know what you think!
I love these kinds of posts – discovering new books to read makes me eternally happy. ๐ I’ve heard a few people mention Big Little Lies recently, I’m thinking I’ll have to give it a read myself.
Thanks for the ideas. ๐
Christie’s Take on Life. xx
It’s great! I’m so glad I finally picked it up!
I haven’t read any of these yet, but the one by Lauren Graham definitely appeals to me since I love GG.
I love it too! You will love this book if you love Gilmore.
I read Lauren Graham’s book in January too. And I totally felt like I was sitting on a couch having a conversation with her! I’ve only read one Jodi Picoult book: The Storyteller. I loved it. I tried to read My Sister’s Keeper a couple months ago and just couldn’t get into it. I’m thinking about picking it up again and I’m wondering what you thought of it.
My Sister’s Keeper is the first book I read that made me fall in love with her books. Don’t see the movie because it’s terrible, but keep at it with the book. I loved it.
