I’ve been trying to lose weight and tone up for my wedding. I really have. I do manage a few cheat meals here and there, but overall I’ve been doing well.
One of the things I miss the most is a great cheeseburger. Gosh, I love them. I could actually totally cut red meat out of my diet if I didn’t love a good cheeseburger so much. So much yum happening there.
News flash though: cheeseburgers aren’t good for you. It’s such a bummer that they are one of the worst things for you at most restaurants, but also the most delicious.
This weekend, I was missing them SO much, that Stephen and I decided to make a health(ier) burger. I’m not saying it’s the equivalent of having a kale salad with no dressing, but it doesn’t make you want to kill yourself afterwards. Best news of all: it was delicious!
Here’s the recipe:
-A small package of 95% lean ground beef
-Salt
-Pepper
-Garlic Salt
-Cumin
-Eggs (quantity will depend on how many burgers you are making)
-Medium avocados (quantity will depend on how many burgers you are making)
-Whole wheat hamburger buns (optional. You can do no bun)
-Lettuce/tomato/whatever healthy veggies you want on your burger
-Grill (George Forman works fine if you don’t have a big grill)
In a mixing bowl, combine lean beef, one egg (or more depending on how large your package is), salt, pepper, cumin and garlic salt. We used just a dash of each. This is a personal preference too. My recommendation is not to go crazy on the cumin. Mix well with your hands and shape meat into patties. Grill as desired. I like mine really well done, but that’s a personal preference. You do you. Set aside in something warm like an oven, microwave or warming station.
Cook sunny-side-up or over-easy eggs. How many will depend on how many burgers you make. You should have one egg per burger. Set aside.
Peel, core and slice avocado. You should have one-half of an avocado per burger.
Toast your whole wheat buns and assemble your burger with the patty, egg and avocado. You may also add lettuce, tomato, etc. No condiments or cheese, though! With the egg and the avocado, you won’t miss them!
Add a healthy side. We did a simple Caprese salad for summer with sliced grape tomatoes, mozzarella, basil and olive oil.
Enjoy!
