Joining a sorority was one of the best decisions I ever
made. It introduced me to some wonderful girls and friends, allowed me to
thrive in leadership roles, opened the door for me to meet Stephen, and created
connections that landed me my first job. Not to mention it was supa fun. I
always had something to do, a place to hang out, and someone to go get
Chick-fil-A with.

It’s about to be sorority recruitment time again and I can’t
stress enough how much I encourage young women to go through the process. You
are not buying your friends. You are opening the door to tons of opportunities
and joining a group that will definitely will definitely make your college
experience the best four years of your life.

With that being said, there are a few extremely important
things to remember while going through the recruitment process. Today, I’m
sharing my favorite tips and the most important things I learned during
sorority recruitment process (on both sides) for those about to go through in
the next month.

Don’t be nervous.
They want to know who you really are, not who you are pretending to be. You
will never find where you belong by pretending to be someone you’re not.

Delete your drinking pictures off social media.
You are not 18 and they are not stupid. They know that is not lemonade in your
solo cup.

On that same note, do not go downtown during recruitment.
Don’t be that girl. You have plenty of downtown time in the years ahead of you.
Focus on your beauty rest. Recruitment is exhausting. You will need it.

Don’t talk about boys, booze, Bibles, or bank accounts.
Just don’t. It gets uncomfortable fast.

Wear comfortable shoes.
I can’t stress this enough. You look stupid when you can’t walk in heels or
your feet hurt. It is a LONG week. Take care of your feet.

Don’t touch.
Don’t hugs. You don’t know the girls yet, they don’t know you. No touchy.

Do not listen to rumors or stereotypes.
I can list almost every horrible stereotype about my sorority and everyone else’s.
That doesn’t make them true. You need to make this decision for you and how you
feel, not based on what you heard. And DON’T talk about the sororities in
between houses or parties.

Be unique.
Have a thing that makes you stand out and memorable. If you’re funny, be funny.
If you’re an Irish jig dancer, talk about being an Irish jig dancer. Sororities
are not cookie cutter despite what people think. They want the girls that are
going to make them better, smarter, and well-rounded.

Look presentable.
Put effort into choosing your outfits. Make sure you don’t have lipstick on
your teeth. Presentation matters, please look like you tried. They are
definitely trying to impress you, so give them the same courtesy.

Act like you want to be there.
If you are a quadruple legacy of one, at least act like interested in the
others. It’s just polite.

You are allowed to eat.
Be mindful and aware. Don’t stuff yourself or ask for seconds, but you are
allowed to sip on the milkshake, lemonade, virgin cosmo, coke, etc. that they
hand you. Don’t be stupid though. One time, I was at a party that had glitter
sprinkled popcorn as a decoration and one of the girls in my group was eating
it by the hand full. Don’t be stupid, but you can eat.

Don’t take anything out.
Leave everything in the house/room from the napkins to the cups to the straws.
Do not take a single thing out of that room/house. It’s a rule and they will
snatch it back so fast your fingernail polish will come off.

Make the decision for you.
Forget your legacy, forget what your roommate is pledging, forget everything
but how you connect with the girls and how you feel when you are with them. If
you make the decision for you, you can’t go wrong. You are going to end up
exactly where you are supposed to. If you trust the system and your instincts, you will end up right where you belong. Home.

What’s your favorite sorority recruitment tip?
Great information to share with those college girls!
LOVE this! My little sister just went back to school this week for work week and to prep to host recruitment. I think it's so funny we all say don't talk about the "4 Bs" haha. Going Greek was the best decision I ever made an I whole heartedly recommend it for everyone!
I think if I could go back to college I would totally go through recruitment. Though I know the process is grueling and not always fair, the relationships sorority sisters have with one another are so special!
I always LOVED recruitment but it was also soooo exhausting. I wish most people knew the work that goes into it
I couldn't have said it any better myself. I always tell girls keep an open mind and don't shut out a chapter just because of what you think you know. I loved being in a sorority and it is so much more than "buying your friends". You pick up sisters, skills, and both professional and personal relationships that will last a lifetime. I wish I could tell everyone to just give it a chance! Thanks for this post! Go CHI O!
Ahhhh his post brings me back!!!! I will forever miss those days!!! Excellent tips
I'm laughing about the 3B's for you. I'm guessing because you're more southern that the bible is more of an issue. Ours was boys, booze, and Obama (aka any politics) because we're so close to DC it becomes a frequent, and touchy, subject. Great tips for girls rushing!
